Lesson Objective:

Learners will demonstrate knowledge of/understanding of/ability to: Figure out how much money they would have to make in order to provide in life for themselves.

 

Common Core State Standard and/or Academic Content Standard:

7.EE #3 Solve multi-step real-life and mathematical problems posed with positive and negative rational numbers in any form (whole numbers, fractions, and decimals), using tools strategically. Apply properties of operations to calculate with numbers in any form; convert between forms as appropriate; and assess the reasonableness of answers using mental computation and estimation strategies..

Computational Thinker: 5b. Students collect data or identify relevant data sets, use digital tools to analyze them, and represent data in various ways to facilitate problem-solving and decision-making.

Essential Question:

  1. How much money do you think you will need to make in order to afford life? Housing, food and essentials, and furniture.

 

Subsidiary Questions:

 

  1. Come up with three occupation options that will provide the living you want.
  2. What kind of education will you need for that occupation?
  3. What schools would best provide the needed education?
  4. What will you need to do to attend one of those schools?
  5. How much will it cost you to attend one of those schools?
  6. How will you pay for the school you want to attend?
  7. If you take out loans for your school what is the interest rate?
  8. At that interest rate how much will you pay total if you pay the loan off in 10 years?
  9. What if you pay it off in 25 years?

 

Assessment:

 

I will use the Internet to promote learning in this activity because the students will have to research the cost of living in the area they are planning to live, they will also research the pay of different occupations, and the schools they want to attend. The learning will be assessed on how well the students did at figuring living expenses, determining an occupation that covers those living expenses, and determining the best school to go to for their education. The students will be provided extra points figuring out how much they would be paying on a school loan after interest if they paid it off in 10 years and 25 years
